Abstract
Background: With COVID-19 expected to spread throughout the years, policies have been proposed for the lockdown or isolation of socially salient groups. In particular, the lockdown of the elderly was suggested to ensure social benefits by blocking infection opportunities of the elderly and allowing the social activities of other age groups. Some argued that such a policy is not discriminatory since it is to protect the elderly and can be allowed for the public good.

Objective: Based on the recent philosophical discussions of discrimination, this paper argues that the lockdown of the elderly is ethically wrong.

Key Findings: Lockdown of the elderly is indirect discrimination and harms the elderly population. We examined philosophical definitions of discrimination and confirmed existing ageism practices.

Conclusion: The paper suggests careful approaches to issues of discrimination in general due to COVID-19.
